Quadzilla Born Again!

""The Fire in the Monster""

Our parts having arrived we're back at the primary drive, clutch and balancer installation.

Note the irregular shape of the balancer shaft. It only goes in one way. Gently rotate it as you remove or install it and you'll find the notch it fits through.

After the shaft is in place, install the woodruff key, balancer weight and gear. The timing marks MUST align like so. Install the  washer, nut with blue Loc-Tite and torque to spec.

Install the large washer, sleeve and needle bearing, followed by the clutch basket, second washer, and clutch hub. Install the friction and drive plates, locking washer and nut with blue Loc-Tite. Torque the nut to spec and bend the washer down onto the nut. Use a punch or cold chisel to beat the washer down onto the nut.

Clutch actuator with bearing properly installed is inserted through the clutch hub cover.

Last step on the primary until we are ready to button it up with the clutch side cover after the top end is installed! Use great care when tightening the clutch spring bolts, the aluminum hub is SOFT, stripping these will cost you a fortune. These can cost a fortune when stripped also.

With the primary drive assembled let's move to the flip side and knock out the counter shaft sprocket and stator!

This little "O" ring should be lubed with gear oil before installation. DON'T FORGET TO PUT IT IN BEFORE THE COUNTER SHAFT SPACER!.

"O" ring and spacer. You also want to use some lube on the spacer and rotate it as you push it in to prevent the seal from buckling. Our Sidewinder Sprocket from Krause Racing has been installed, torqued to spec and the lock washer tortured into position.

Fit the stator into place (ours was sent to Ricky Stator for a hot rewind of course), slide the rubber wire grommet into it's notch and put in the two bottom screws loose enough you can rotate the stator to line up the timing marks as shown. Tighten the screws gently and install this last screw.

Do not attempt the final torque on the stator screws with a regular screw driver, you'll only destroy the screw heads, set them with your hand impact driver! Here's the finished view of our freshly wound lighting coils from Ricky Stator.
And now at long last we are done for this month!  Trust me, writing this tech stuff is a thousand times harder than doing it. Time to take a step back and admire our handiwork, have a well deserved cold brew and clean up the shop to keep Mom off our ass!

We'll see you back next month when we button up the side covers, install the top end and with the help of one of Motion Pro's awesome test kits I teach you all the most important technique in two stroke engine building, "How  To Do A Leak Down Test."

   See you in April!
