This is the first
diesel-powered ATV on the market and provides riders with the
low-end torque and outstanding fuel economy of diesel power, and
features such as: automatic Polaris Variable Transmission with the
Polaris Engine Braking System (EBS), intelligent On-Demand true
4-wheel drive, independent MacPherson strut front suspension and
long-travel independent rear suspension, full floorboards, and
single-lever all-wheel hydraulic disc brakes.
The DIESEL gives farmers, ranchers, and work crews the
versatility of an ATV, plus the strong, steady power and workplace
fuel compatibility of a diesel engine. Polaris designed the
DIESEL?s .455-liter diesel engine from the ground up specifically
for this ATV. This liquid-cooled, 4-stroke engine has a premium, dry
sump oil system for optimal cooling and to enhance performance, and
it is counterbalanced for smooth operation. It has a heavy duty
starter, 300-watt alternator, and two batteries for maximum cranking
power.
The DIESEL uses the fully automatic PVT (Polaris Variable
Transmission) with the Polaris Engine Braking System. The PVT
requires no shifting, so the rider is always in the right gear,
whether towing loads, hauling cargo, or maneuvering across a feedlot
or job site. The transmission is dual- sensing, so it responds to
both engine RPM and vehicle torque load for cooler operation and
superior backshifting in all conditions. EBS is beneficial when
riding on hilly terrain and in mountainous areas. It utilizes engine
compression to improve braking efficiency.
The DIESEL?s E-Z Shift lever lets a rider select high or low
gear range, or reverse. A thumb switch lets the drive quickly and
easily move between 2-wheel drive and On-Demand true 4-wheel drive
while riding.
Power is delivered to the wheels by a 4-wheel independent shaft
drive system identical to the one used on the gas-powered Polaris
Sportsman 500, the premier ATV on the market. The MacPherson strut
independent front suspension provides the DIESEL with 6.25 inches of
travel and gives this ATV a tight, 65-inch turning radius. The
progressive-rate independent rear suspension has dual gas shocks,
9.5 inches of vertical rear wheel travel, and a unique stabilizing
anti-roll bar. The DIESEL?s 11 inches of ground clearance give
this hard-working ATV outstanding on-the-job mobility.
The DIESEL has single-lever, all-wheel hydraulic disc brakes and
a hydraulic rear axle-mounted foot brake. It also has an electronic
speedometer with a digital hour meter and an odometer/tripmeter
offering readouts in both miles and kilometers. Other standard
features include: rugged, composite-material front and rear racks
with a total cargo capacity of 270 pounds (90 front/i 80 rear); a
heavy-duty hitch with a 1,225-pound towing capacity; front DC outlet
and rear DC plug-in; composite-material full floorboards;
3.75-gallon fuel tank; and three quartz-halogen headlights and a
brake light.
