We have been spending many hours ATV riding and have had the chance to ride quads equipped with a thumb throttle and quads equipped with a twist throttle. For short rides, the thumb throttle is acceptable. For long rides, I definately believe the twist throttle is superior. The twist throttle may not be a good option for beginning riders, but if you spend some hours on your quad you will become accustomed to the twist very quickly. We called up our friends at Rocky Mountain ATV and had them send us a twist throttle kit and some grips for our 2001 Yamaha Raptor. They sent a Motion Pro kit which consists of a new throttle cable and CR Competition throttle. Motion Pro offers a number of throttles. The CR Comp Throttle has a die-cast aluminum housing with a black epoxy finish. It will open 30-38mm carburetors. It is slower than the Vortex, Turbo & 314, but a bit faster turning than the CR Pro Throttle. The other important piece is a new set of grips. You will need a set of grips made for a twist throttle, as the right hand grip will have a slightly larger opening than the left to accommodate the throttle sleeve. A set of Pro Grip ultra gels fit the bill perfectly. Now that we have all the parts together we are ready for the install.
