Reviewer's Notebook: Forrest Tool's MAX AX
Forrest Tool's MAX AX
The family-owned Forrest Tool Company makes the MAX AX, a multiple-use tool that really helps make the most of the space available inside a 4x4. The MAX tool that Forrest Tools sells to the public is the same tool sold to the military, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), US Forest Service (USFS), as well as search and rescue teams.

The MAX fills the role of a full range of hand tools:
Hudson Bay-style ax
Shovel
Hammer/sledge
Mattock
Broad pick
Pick
Hoe
Rake
The AX is a well-engineered and stoutly-constructed tool system, with a single handle and multiple attachments. On the heel of the ax, a tapered hole arrangement allows quick accessory changes. The unused attachments stay safely stored in the individual sleeves of the Cordura carrying case. The case has handles and a sleeve to attach it to a belt.
The MAX handle comes in two flavors: hickory wood and banana yellow composite. The stout hickory handle looks good and promises years of heavy use, but the yellow fiberglass and polyurethane handle is nearly indestructible, a bit lighter, and obviously, harder to misplace. Forrest Tools uses carbon tool steel, tempered to the USFS's specifications, then painted with bright red paint. This paint holds up surprisingly well to digging, prying, grubbing, etc. A thick leather bit cover protects the ax blade, as well as your hands and feet. That leather will last indefinitely if stored inside the vehicle, but if stored outside, exposed to the elements, apply a good leather treatment to add life to the leather cover.

Usage Impressions
The MAX AX continues to prove itself every time I use it. Need some fast firewood for a camp at 7,000 feet on Lewis & Clark?s Lolo Trail? The sharp ax is weighted perfectly, with a textured handle for slip-resistance. Maintaining a trail? The MAX beats a Pulaski ax, the trail tamer's old standby, hands down. Removing brush? The mattock, hoe, and rake have you covered. Digging a starter hole for your Pull Pal? The shovel will have you sinking that anchor in no time.

Conclusion
The MAX AX is an excellent replacement for multiple tools that most 'wheelers already carry. The MAX AX can help reduce the mess in your truck's tool area, and still allow you to bring along the items that you need... and if it is sturdy enough for service in the USFS Freddies' seaweed green trucks, then it should be tough enough for rugged four wheeling use.
