The Rally 4000 is Hella's newest halogen lamp. Pictured above is their long range pencil beam. Below is their new Eurobeam driving lamp. |

I don't need to waste much ink going on and on about why you need big lights to shatter the darkness on late night joy rides into the unknown. You know you need them, and your truck wants 'em. So many of them that if you switch them all on at once your alternator will fry like the heart of a 400 pound chain smoker trying to run a marathon uphill in a heat wave.
If we all had unlimited resources we would buy the newest wave in illumination technology, Hella's HID (High Intensity Discharge) auxiliary lamps. But since they also discharge your back account with a high intensity, us mere mortals will be looking at halogen lamps.
The best lights on the market is a short list, namely PIAA and Hella, I own several lights from both companies as well as some old Cibie's. While they are all excellent lamps, I feel that Hella is the better value. They provide greater strength, more features, and comparable or superior quality at a lower price than other top of line lights.
For our Project Expedition we chose to use two sets of Hella's newest full size halogen lamps, the Rally 4000. Available in matte black satin finish or bright chrome, we went with the black satin. Mounted on the grill guard are two of Hella's Eurobeam driving lamps, with a wide and deep light pattern designed to reach beyond the factory high beams. And up top on the roof rack a pair of pencil beams, with a long, narrow penetrating beam to reach beyond the driving lamps.
Some of the slick new features incorporated in the 4000 series driving lamps are an all metal construction for superior off road durability, standard 100 watt H3 bulb, super cool adjusting knobs that allow you to aim the lamps without tools and permit permanent mounting to eliminate theft. The lamps feature a plug type electrical connector for easy installation/removal on race vehicles. Eurobeam driving lamps also feature a 10 watt auxiliary parking lamp built into the bottom of the reflector. With the covers on this creates a subtle glow that looks just too cool.
Hella's quality is time tested and speaks for itself, I've been running their lamps for over 20 years and never had one fail other than a burned out bulb. Their new Rally 4000 lamps are the best I've used to date. The light the emit shatters the darkness and lets you see further than your throttle can get you at speeds greater than 100 mph. and with their new adjuster that require no tools, I don't see another choice for auxiliary lamps on the horizon.

Better than the best, on a scale of 1-10, a 12!
Believe it or not, some kooky gadgets really do work! This rear window spoiler/dust deflector really does keep the rear window and lift gate clean! |

I never liked all that schlock that builds up on the back window of SUVs and vans. Air from under the truck deposits a ton of dust, spoogey and crud all over the rear gate and makes your truck look like hell and prevents good visibility.
The salesman stuffed me into getting a little smoked plexiglass spoiler that looks like a hood deflector (which I hate) and mounts at the top rear of the lift gate, forcing clean air down and thus displacing the crud filled air from below. Promising me a lifetime free of rear window spoogey for a paltry sum of 70 bucks, I bought it just to shut him up and get away safely to my car. And I'll be damned, it WORKS!
I now motor down the highway, with clear aft visibility and a sparkling clean posterior. Who'd a thunk, some gadgets really do work....
Be sure to tune in next month when we go over the modifications to our Project Baja Expeditions interior appointments and do a full review of Gibson's Sport Truck Exhaust and Headers!
