Toyota Truck of the Month - Roc Weezle - Toyota 4x4 @ Off-Road.com

Feb. 01, 2006 By Jay Kopycinski
At first glance, this white Toyota truck looks like a super clean thirteen year old truck with some nice trail mods. However, anyone but the most casual observer soon realizes that this truck is not so ordinary. Monte Hall is the builder and driver of this meticulously fabricated '84 standard bed truck and his custom license plate (1GOIN84) gives some hint to this trucks capability. rw5.jpg
Monte went right to work pumping up the power by removing the stock 4 banger and installing a '91 vintage 4.3L Chevy V6. The engine is fed by GM throttle body injection and drives a Turbo 350 tranny. The stock axles each hold a Detroit locker and gearing is 4.37:1. Monte also added custom rear disc brakes to help slow the 33" BFG Mud Terrains mounted on Boyd wheels.

The truck sits on a 4 inch Trailmaster lift combined with a 1 1/2" body lift. Upgrades to the front axle include a solid stainless steel tie rod, draglink, and torque rod with rod ends (heims). Each of these pieces is beautifully machined and designed for increased strength over stock.

The cab houses the usual comfort features and goodies such as stereo and CB, plus a custom dash panel Monte built to house an array of Autometer gauges. A custom console between the bucket seats holds additional gauges and a B&M auto shifter. Driver and passenger protection is increased by the in-cab rollcage.

Exterior protection includes a custom front bumper with a Warn XD9000i winch and a custom wrap around rear bumper. The license plate has been frenched into the tailgate to keep it up high and out of harms way. Other custom touches include the Rhino-lined engine compartment and bed, spare tire and cooler mounts in the bed, a lockable tools/storage compartment, spare axles on custom mounts under bed, and on-board air via the GM R4 air compressor.

Monte hand-built many of the items on the truck and each is professionally crafted. He wanted a 4x4 that not only looked good, but also performed well.....and that's what he got. Next time you're wheeling one of the tougher trails in Moab, on the Rubicon, or traveling any of a number of southwestern trails, you may run across Monte and his Toy playing in the rocks.
