After going a long for a ride on
the Rubicon trail last year Jack Geiger had such a good time that
he decided he was going to build his own rock crawling truck and
run the Rubicon himself the following year. After careful planning
he purchased a stock 1989 Toyota Pickup (with shell) and started
the build-up over the winter months.
Modifications started with a 2" body lift and 33 X 12.50 BFG Mud tires. These tires fit well with just a little trimming of the front fenders and tapping of the body seem with a hammer. After that 4:88 gears and lockers were added front and rear. For the rear he choose a Detroit soft locker, up front a Detroit EZ locker for the IFS. The suspension was upgraded with Downey 26 mm Torsion bars and rear add a leaf for the spring pack. Rancho 9000 series shocks handle the dampening. A set of heavy duty nerf bars were created by Scott Wilson to keep trail damage to the body to a minimum. His son Chris Geiger built the custom rear bumper. A 4:70 Marlin Transfer case was used to keep the truck running slow on the trail. Confer IFS and crossmember skid plates were used along with a custom front differential plate to protect the under side of the truck. A Cobra CB helps with communication. After a few trial trips to Pismo Beach and Hollister Hills Jack was ready. Like a butterfly out of it's cocoon the truck emerged ready to run the trails this summer. As you can see in the pictures he successfully ran the trail and is looking forward to many more trips in and around California's back country.
