CA4WDC's Sierra Trek '98

Nov. 01, 2005 By Randy Burleson
California Association of Four Wheel Drive Club's (CA4WDC) annual Sierra Trek is one of the biggest organized four wheeling events in the world, most years. This year's 32nd annual event was a bit smaller than last year's sixteen hundred participants, thanks to last-minute rescheduling courtesy of El Nino.

The full story is elsewhere but check out these video clips!

Rocky Downhill Before First Water Crossing

This is an optional tough section, and is usually roped off to keep the flow of traffic rolling. This was the Thursday 'unofficial' run, so there was a lot less traffic. In spite of the dog that wanders through the foreground of this clip, it really showcases what kind of articulation a well-built Toyota minitruck can produce. (White Toyota: 5.8M)

Descending this bouldered slope (the bypass to the above clip!) really keeps your attention. A grizzled and scarred tree stands guard to prevent crowding the driver's side, while a boulder keeps your attention on the passenger side. That boulder first crosses you up, then drops you off. (Tan Jeep CJ7: 4.3M, Brown Jeep CJ7: 3.6M, Black Isuzu Amigo: 3.4M)

Winch Hill One

The rocky approach to Winch Hill One has boulders, pits, and large amounts of loose rock. Kimber drives her CJ5 flawlessly through this rock garden, and then takes the tough line up the side of the cleft for BIG air. (Green CJ5: 6.3M)

Paul clambers up Winch Hill One in his low-geared Toyota mini-truck and makes it look EASY. (Tan Toyota Truck: 4.0M)

Squeeze Rock

This clip shows the graceful way through the Squeeze Rock, lining up to watch the driver's side sheet metal, knowing that a tight fit on the driver's side guarantees safe passage on the passenger side - if you are only one TJ wide. (Teal TJ: 3.7M)

Unnamed Obstacle Between Winch Hills Three and Four

Kimber's new locker gave her the confidence to pick an entirely different line up this step. With lower gears, she might just have made it... (Green CJ5, stall: 2.9M)
After quickly repositioning herself a few feet down the shelf, climbing up was much easier. (Green CJ5, no stall: 4.5M)
