Your Views: If these areas are actually pristine, designation of wilderness would no longer be needed
April 11, 2008
Editor,
I was, to say the least, surprised and a bit puzzled at Nevada Wilderness Project's request to expand its proposed wilderness area to include the Pine Grove Hills, the south end of the Pine Nut Range outside of Carson City and Wilson Canyon south of Yerington.
As you know, for an area to be designated by Congress as wilderness, the area in question must be deemed pristine. Since these areas have had both historic mining, and more recently, OHV use, these areas would hardly seem to fit the definition of pristine, unless the impact of mining and OHV use is not as damaging to the environment as first reported.
