Charging System Upgrade conclusion

The main battery with the cable connected from the auxilliary battery.

Wrangler NW offers many types of electrical connectors and accessories. The negative post has one of the military low-profile connectors while the positive post has the Phoenix Gold heavy duty terminal connection.

The next step would be to upgrade our alternator. The factory alternator only puts out about 60 amps.

This is Wrangler NW's 170 amp large case alternator sitting beside our stock small case alternator. This was our first choice but after further investigation we opted for the 105 amp replacement alternator. Project Blazin' has a Chevy 454 which uses different brackets than a Chevy 350. Wrangler NW has brackets to allow the large case alternator to fit in many factory configurations but did not have one for the 454. We decided to go with their 105 amp alternator which is a small case unit and would bolt up without custom bracketry. It is recomended that you run a larger charge wire from your main battery to the new alternator to handler the higher output. We ran an 8 gauge wire to the 105 amp alternator but you would want to use a heavier 2 gauge wire for a 170 amp or larger alternator.

Conclusion

With our new battery, Battery Manager system and higher amp-alternator on Project Blazin' I feel much more comfortable that we won't be left stranded somewhere. Wrangler NW uses very high quality components and can help you upgrade your charging system in almost any vehicle. You can mix and match the different compenents to come up with a system that fits your needs. Even if you are not ready to upgrade your charging system you should call Wrangler NW and get one of their catalogs as they have a full range of specialty connectors and parts for your 4x4.
