Husqvarna I.D. Chart

Figuring Out What It Is

Identifying Vintage and Classic Huskys

250 R/T (Road and Trail) was a dual purpose Husky.

Collecting, riding and racing classic and vintage bikes is a big deal now. And among the most desirable collectibles are those beautiful chrome-tank Huskys we all saw in the movie, On Any Sunday.

Even the Huskys up to the mid-80s are considered desirable bikes. At least some of them are. But as you hunt around for older Husqvarnas and parts, how do you know what's what?

Perhaps this Husky ID chart will help.

400 MX bike from 1973.

The 250 Husky WR dominated enduros all through the 70s.

Here's some general information about the Husky two strokes that might be of interest: the engines ranged in size from 125ccs to 500ccs, with the following displacements: 125,175, 250, 260, 400, 430, 450 and 500ccs. All the engines were build on similar lines, as air-cooled singles. Most were normal straight-through induction systems, with flat-topped pistons. Some later models used reed valve assemblies. The CR 250 introduced in 1974 and the 175 and 360 CR in 1975 utilized ultra-lightweight magnesium alloy in the engine castings. All the engines before these used aluminum alloy castings.

450 XC was big and fast, but not a popular bike.

In the late 60s and early 70s, Husky literally ruled the desert.

By the mid-80s, Husky brought out the exotic four-strokes, which were either hated or loved by their owners, depending on if you knew how to start them and keep them healthy. When they ran, they were truly wondrous. And when they didn't, vile curses filled the air.

Which are the most desirable? Most collectors agree that the chrome/red tanked bikes from 67 through 71 are the best. In fact, many think that the 1970 400 Cross with the removable sub-frame is the absolute most desirable of all the models. Oddly enough, I have one in my garage at this moment, with only 300 miles on it. Should be an easy resto, if there is such a thing.

Here's where you check for the frame ID.

Later models had a tag on the left side case cover.
