Cherokee America - Tuffy SUV Security Storage Box

Nov. 01, 2005 By David Jones
Why do we own Jeep Cherokees and other sport utility vehicles (S.U.V.) rather than bob tailed, hard core, barely street legal 4X4s? Need. I exchanged a tricked out Wrangler for a Cherokee because there is not enough room in the Wrangler for my wife, two sons and all their necessities. Oh sure, I tried everything from racks to off road trailers; but, no modifications could make the Wrangler as practical and as good off road as the Cherokee. Now that I have the Cherokee, how do I organize all that room in the back? Just call the same folks that make all those neat security boxes for the Wranglers and CJs . . . Tuffy Security Products.

Sure enough, Tuffy Security Products from Lakewood, Colorado builds a box for most everything. I don't know if it is a guy thing or what, but I love neat boxes. I spend hours it seems in department stores starring at all those neat Rubber Maid Action Packers and other boxes just thinking of ways to use them. Tuffy sells highly thief resistant steel boxes made to last a lifetime. They have a few boxes that are made specifically for Cherokees and other S.U.V.s as well as the wide variety for the bob tailed vehicles.

The box pictured is the S.U.V. Security Storage Box which covers most of the Cherokee's rear floor behind the back seat. It measures 29" long, 37" wide, and 5" deep. It has a single piano hinged lid that covers 1/3 of the box's top surface and secured by two keyed alike locks. The box is designed for Cherokees with the spare tire mounted inside; so you don't have to worry about relocating the spare. Mounting the box as shown requires drilling four holes in the Cherokee's floor and bolting the box in place. Two of the bolts align over the gas tank, so Tuffy recommends lowering the tank enough to safely drill the holes and tighten the bolts. Once bolted down your contents enjoy maximum theft protection.

Although not as secure, I came up with a alternate installation method which may interest you. I recommend mounting the box using the four existing holes in the Cherokee's floor. What existing holes you say? The ones remaining after you remove the four tie downs Jeep provided in cargo area. The holes are outside the unibody's frame rail and easily accessible. You will need some additional hardware. Purchase enough one inch wide, 3/16 flat steel bar to make two bars long enough to go across the cargo area covering the four tie down holes. Align the box on the two bars where you would like it installed and mark four holes for mounting the box to the bars. Mark the location of the four holes in the floor on the bars. Drill four holes in the bottom of the box and six holes in the bars as needed. Bolt the box to the bars using carriage bolts to retain a smooth surface. Mount the bars to the floor using eye bolts and washers as necessary for spacing and strength. Mounted in this fashion, provides stronger rear cargo tie downs and eliminates the need to lower the gas tank. When traveling, Action Packer type boxes can be secured on top of the box using tie down straps keeping everything neat and secure. For daily driving, the box provides a flat cargo area on top with emergency gear stored safely below.

I can easily fit two recovery straps, a first aid kit, jumper cables, a large four way lug wrench, hatchet, saw, spare CB antenna, etc. in the S.U.V. Security Storage Box. I suppose those with multi-disc CD changers could easily figure out how to mount it in the box. If a CD changer is the only item you wish to secure, try Tuffy's Compact Security Lockbox measuring 15 3/4" long, 6 3/8" wide, and 10" high. Whatever your choice, Tuffy products stand ready to protect your valuables and deter theft.
