EVERETT, Washington -- Do you drive a Jeep? Does your Jeep feel gutless when it comes to power? You, my friend, are not alone! Large populations of Jeep owners suffer the same symptoms. There are many different ways to increase the power on your Jeep. A quick and easy way is to lower the gear ratio in your differentials. Randy's Ring & Pinion now offers American Made Yukon Gear 4.88 ratio ring and pinions for most Jeep applications. With the 4.88's, Randy's also has a Yukon Ultimate 35 Kit, which includes two HD 30 spline axles, and a Detroit Locker for ultimate traction. Most Jeep enthusiasts are intimidated by working on a differential, so their first thought is find a shop that can do the install for them.
At Randy's Ring & Pinion, they know how you feel. Randy's has been in business and setting up differentials for nearly twenty years. Through the years, they have used a wide variety of different tools to identify what it takes to make building a differential easier. Randy's carries a huge selection of tools to make your differential building experience easy and painless even from your garage at home. As jeep enthusiasts, Randy's offers several different brands of Ring and Pinions, Positractions, Lockers, and Axles. Each vehicle varies depending on what it is going to be used for. An excellent source to get research from is Randy's web site at www.RingPinion.com. Once the decisions have been made and you know what you want simply call and order the parts and tools you need to begin installation. Our project vehicle was a 1998 Jeep TJ. The owner thought it would be cool and would look "trick" with a set of 31" Mud Terrains. As you probably have guessed, the tires went on and the power plummeted, making use of fifth gear only going down hill. He described the performance as "gutless with no traction."
The Jeeper knew he had to make a change and make it soon. After careful consideration and insight from Randy's, he decided to lower the gears to a 4.88 ratio for ultimate power from his four cylinder. For an extreme traction package, he chose a set of HD Yukon Ultimate 35 Axles w/Detroit Locker, and a True-Trac for the front. Randy's sell tools that are needed for such a set-up, which can be used in a shop, garage, or home. Some tools are: Dial Indicator w/Magnetic Stand to measure backlash, Air Guns to collapse crush sleeves and obtain pinion bearing preload, Bearing Puller to allow shims to be changed easily without destroying the bearing, Dial Calipers to measure shims correctly and ensure proper set-up, Pinion Depth Setting Tool, and a Housing Spreader for Dana differentials to allow the carrier to be removed and installed easier. Extreme care is taken when assembling the new gears, lockers, and axles to ensure proper installation. Work in a well-lit clean area, and always use proper safety equipment and precautions. After the axles were installed, oil filled to the proper level, and those troublesome 31" Mud Terrains put back on the vehicle you will be glad to know the Jeep owner was extremely amazed and surprised at the HUGE increase of performance his, once, gutless Jeep had become. In his own words "THIS ROCKS! Now when I put my foot on the accelerator my Jeep gets up and goes, and the Detroit and True-Trac take me anywhere I want to go."
