There comes a time in every cherokee's life where
there just isn't enough room to store stuff. No room for recovery
equipment, spare tires, duffle bags and on and on and on... I've
long since decided that although I did have a XJ that I still
didn't have enough room for my gear if I had my full size spare
laying on the floor in the back. I have had my eye on a safari
style roof rack for a while not only because of the cool look it
adds to the truck but also for the ability to be able to haul stuff
on the roof.
Since my truck is a 1988 model the factory roof rack
leaves a lot to be desired. The cross rails are VERY flimsy and
could barely keep a small object from touching the roof. I tried to
put spare on the factory cross rails and the weight of the tried
caused the rails to bend and touch the roof. Obviously this isn't
good and it was very annoying as the tire and rack would tap the
roof at every bump. The other problem with the factory roof rack is
that the rails are bolted into rubber stoppers with nuts inserted
in them.,two of which had already pulled out so I wanted a safari
rack that could be mounted to the rain gutters.
This led me on the great search for rack suppliers.
These are some that I've found:
Surco |
various sizes of racks
all aluminum
bolt together. |
Conferr |
various sizes
all powder coated steel
welded one piece unit (must be shipped freight) |
Garvin Industries |
various rack sizes
all powdercoated 3/4" square steel tubing
bolt together
many add on accessories |
After researching for the racks I decided that for
me it was important to have a strong steel rack and also a rack
with many accessories and it also needed to be bolt together so
that I wouldn't have to pay as much shipping. The Surco rack would
be a good choice for a lightweight sturdy roof rack that can haul a
moderate amount of weight. The largest advantage for the Surco rack
is that because of it's aluminum construction it will not
rust.
I decided to go with the Garvin
Industries Wilderness Rack because of the great reputation for a
very strong rack that can take abuse and also the ability to add
accessory mounts and for rain gutter mounting. The Garvin rack is
rather expensive compared to the other racks and the accessory
mounts are more expensive than I think they should be based on the
material and labor time estimated to make these parts. But the
basic rack is beaten by no others. (Short of a completely custom
rack)
The rack or ordered was the
4'2"x4'4"x4" model. This rack is intended to be used with the
special mounts that adapt to the factory roof rack rails, not the
rain gutter mounts like I had liked. I got this model because of
the availability at the dealer at which I bought it. I was not
going to buy the rain gutter mounts because of the rather steep
price that Garvin wanted for something that I could fabricate in an
afternoon with a bender and welder.
I purchased the rack and it came in 4 main pieces. (The 2
curved section and the 2 side rails.) I also purchased the floor
kit which provided the 6 rails that are horizontal in the picture.
This provides a sturdy mounting floor for any equipment. Made
entirely out of 3/4" square tubing the rack is quite strong and
quite heavy. The main rack takes 8 bolts to hold it together 2 at
each location. The flooring kit has a bolt at each end that goes up
through the cross pieces and into the flooring bars. Be carefully
not to tighten them too tight, you'll ruin the special threaded
insert in the flooring bars.
After the rack
was bolted together I took basic dimensions of the truck and
compared that to the roof rack and began to design the rain gutter
mounts. I had seen Garvin's rain gutter mount so I knew in what
direction I was heading and made a dimensioned drawing and went to
the shop to start building.

After a couple hours I had my mounts.I made them
out of 1/4"x2" mild steel. I painted them and then installed them
on the rack and put it on the truck. I have to say I'm VERY
impressed with the quality of the rack and have kept my tire up
there ever since I put it up.
