1988 Suzuki RM 125

Nov. 01, 2005 By ORC STAFF

What the RM did well in '87, it did better in '88!

Power: The '88 RM 125 engine developed mild low-end power. This mild power disappeared into good mid-range and strong top-end power. The engine was rather slow reving.

Suspension: The Suzuki's suspension was, again, absolutely outstanding this year! Big bumps, little ripples, and monster jumps were all absorbed like magic. This suspension performs just as well as many suspensions found on today's 125 MXer's!

Handling: The RM was easy to ride due to the smooth and well controlled power delivery. Its cornering abilities were good, but it wasn't known to be a turning fool. It was a fairly stable machine at high speed, but it tended to keep the rider alert to the action.

Reliability: The RM was fairly reliable. Some owners had low end failures. Lower rod bearing tolerances that were too tight seemed to be the problem. Engine modifications tended to reduce the machines reliability. Some of Suzuki's detail quality seemed a bit marginal.

Odds & Ends: The '88 RM 125 makes a good trail/play bike. It can be used for some low key MX racing.

Other notable design updates:
Engine was totally redesigned
Transmission gear ratios were revised
Clutch received an extra set of plates
