Kurt Caselli maintained his perfect record in the AMA Racing/Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series by winning the Rabbit Creek 100 outside of Murphy, Idaho, round three of this year’s series, with David Kamo and David Pearson rounding out the podium.
Though the banner drop caught Caselli somewhat by surprise, the FMF/KTM Factory Off-Road Racing Team desert star quickly went to the front on his Anthony Dibasilio-prepared 450 SX-F just two weeks after winning the San Felipe 250.
“I felt good after the first alternate pit out here [at mile 20]; after 20 or 30 miles, I started to loosen up a little bit and was feeling fine as was able to just ride my own race,” he said.
“I wanted to push pretty hard at the beginning and just get a good enough gap to where the guy in second wasn’t able to find the little short-cut lines and follow and key off of me.”
Though he missed a corner or two and unofficially lost the lead early on the first loop (loop one was a quick 68 miles while loop two was a more technical 40 miles), Caselli spent more time in front than not, completing the 108 miles in two hours, 31 minutes and 56 seconds.
After Caselli got in front for good, several riders tussled over second. THR Motorsports Kawasaki’s David Pearson and Purvines Racing Kawasaki’s Justin Morrow both enjoyed spending time up front, but they both ended up ceding the runner-up spot to local favorite Kamo on his Johnny Campbell Racing Honda. Kamo got out of the second alternate gas stop on loop one quicker than Pearson to move into third, and then he moved by Morrow when the Kawasaki pilot blew a corner at the end of a long sand wash section. (Morrow would crash hard later and limp in for sixth place.)
Pearson served a one-minute penalty for walking past the bomb (the BLM doesn’t allow Dirt Inc. let racers ride the bomb so they can walk up to the end of the bomb but not past it) when he reached the main pit at the end of the first loop. When Morrow crashed on loop two, Pearson stopped to make sure of his condition, which let Kamo’s teammate Colton Udall close in after a rebounding from a mediocre start.
Pearson restarted and managed to hold Udall off for the rest of the loop, keeping his podium streak alive at 2-2-3. Fourth place for Udall improved his previous best H&H finish, with Purvines Racing Kawasaki’s Nick Burson claiming fifth.
Morrow limped in for sixth followed by a trio of 250s--class winner Axel Pearson, Ryan Smith and Skyler Howes--with Vet A winner Dan Capparelli rounding out the top 10 overall.
