Racers were faced with challenging weather conditions for the fifth and sixth rounds of the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series at the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah. Although morning qualifying races were cancelled on Saturday morning due to poor weather and track conditions, Lucas Oil workers were able to get the track in order so the show could go on the rest of the weekend.
In the Pro 2 class, Rob MacCachren battled to earn his second win of the season in the class, holding off Supercross legend Jeremy McGrath and Patrick Clark in second and third, respectively. The podium finishes for McGrath and Clark were their first of the season. The next day for Round 6, McGrath was able to get in front of the pack to earn his first victory of the year, with Bryce Menzies finishing in second and Carl Renezeder rounding out the podium in third.
In the Pro 4 class, Bryce Menzies earned his second victory of the season at Round 5, holding off second-place finisher Rob MacCachren. Doug Fortin finished in third in the race, giving him his first podium finish of the season. Round 6 saw the return of last year’s Pro 4 Champion Kyle LeDuc, who earned his first podium finish of the young season with a victory at the final Pro 4 race of the weekend. Finishing behind LeDuc was points leader Renezeder, who’s made the podium at every race other than Round 5, which includes two wins and two second-place finishes thus far. Rob MacCachren rounded out the podium in third to remain in the hunt for the season championship.
In the Pro Lite class, Jerett Brooks entered the weekend with a slim points lead over Brandon Arthur, and he did in fact extend his lead in the standings with a victory at the first race of the weekend. Finishing on the podium behind Brooks was Ryan Beat in second place, while Brad DeBerti earned his third third-place finish of the season. At the final Pro Lite race of the weekend, Brooks again was atop the podium. Beat finished in second, and rounding out the podium in third was Brandon Arthur.
The Pro Buggy class has been very competitive so far in the 2016 season, with no racer emerging as the clear-cut favorite so far. At Round 5, Kevin McCullough earned his second victory of the season after holding off second-place finisher Garrett George and third-place finisher Darren Hardesty. Mike Valentine emerged at Round 6 to take the victory ahead of Hardesty and George in second and third, respectively. The win also gives valentine his second victory of the season.
The Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series returns to action south of the border next month the weekend of June 18-19. Estero Beach in Ensenada will host a pro-class-only race weekend on the Baja International Short Course.
