Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, announced a recall of 1.46 million vehicles worldwide due to a software malfunction in the anti-lock brake system (ABS) that could disable the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall includes nearly 1.23 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks from the 2019 and 2021-2024 model years in the U.S., along with about 159,000 vehicles in Canada, 13,000 in Mexico, and 61,000 in other regions outside North America.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted that software malfunctions in the ABS control module can disable the ESC, a critical safety system designed to help drivers maintain control of their vehicles by adjusting braking and engine power.

Stellantis stated that when this issue occurs, drivers will notice several dashboard warning lights at startup, including indicators for the ABS, ESC, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Forward Collision Warning (FCW), signaling that these systems are not functional. However, foundational braking will continue to work.
