Toyota’s latest push into the European electric vehicle market signals broader ambitions that may eventually reshape its North American lineup—including the possibility of electrified versions of the Tacoma and 4Runner.

Recently, Toyota confirmed it will launch a new slate of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) aimed at Europe’s core SUV segments, including updated and all-new models like the bZ4X, Urban Cruiser, and C-HR+. Each model will offer all-wheel drive, multiple battery configurations, and more mature design language, underscoring Toyota’s intent to deliver utility-focused BEVs that don’t compromise on capability.

While the announcement focuses on Europe, there are hints that Toyota’s electric strategy could extend to off-road staples like the Tacoma and 4Runner. One early sign is the growing role of hybrid technology in Toyota’s truck lineup. The 2024 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX pairs a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with an electric motor to deliver 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque—making it the most powerful Tacoma yet. The Tundra i-FORCE MAX uses a similar hybrid setup to boost power and towing performance.

Toyota has also previewed the Land Cruiser Se concept, an all-electric SUV that explores how battery-electric power could be applied to one of the brand’s most iconic off-roaders. Though still in concept form, the Land Cruiser Se suggests that Toyota is considering how to bring electrification to its most rugged nameplates.

With Toyota planning to release six new BEVs globally by the end of 2026—and next-generation battery technology including solid-state packs in the pipeline—an all-electric 4Runner and Tacoma feel less like a question of if, and more of when. As the off-road market begins to embrace electrification, Toyota’s evolving strategy appears to be laying the foundation for its next-generation trucks and SUVs.
