Do I need to run different fenders or flares if I have larger tires?
From a legal standpoint, you’ll want to check your local motor vehicle codes to see if they’re required to cover the width of your tires. Mechanically you may require them if your tires are so large that they rub against the existing fender. Going to an aftermarket fender/flare may give you the clearance to eliminate this.
What is the difference between the aftermarket fenders and fender flares?
Aftermarket fender flares are usually made of plastic and provide an extra amount of coverage of large tires and don’t normally require any extensive modification. When you opt to install a set of aftermarket fenders, these usually provide much more clearance so you can use larger tires, are constructed of more durable material and can drastically alter the look of your TJ. These fenders usually require much more labor to modify your Jeep to properly install.
