Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, is recalling more than 63,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs due to a defect that could cause the vehicles to lose power or fail to engage park, according to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The issue, which affects certain 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokee models, poses an increased risk of crashes and rollaway incidents.

The problem stems from a poorly seated input shaft ring in the power transfer unit (PTU), which may become damaged over time. This can cause the transmission and differential to disengage, resulting in a loss of drive power or the inability to properly engage park, according to the recall documents. Stellantis warns that this defect could lead to an unintended vehicle rollaway and increase the likelihood of accidents or injuries.

Drivers may notice a “Service 4WD” message, unusual noises, vibrations, or changes in drive quality prior to failure. However, Stellantis cautions that a loss of drive power could occur without prior warning.

The automaker has not yet detailed how it plans to address the issue but stated that notification letters will be sent to affected vehicle owners beginning February 13, 2025. Owners can contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 using the recall reference number 01C or visit the NHTSA website for further details.

Past Recalls and Investigations

This latest recall follows several high-profile Jeep-related safety issues in 2024. Last February, Stellantis recalled 338,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a ball joint problem that could result in a loss of driver control. That same month, the automaker addressed a software glitch affecting 1.2 million vehicles, including Jeep Compass and Grand Cherokee models.

More recently, NHTSA launched investigations into power loss issues in Jeep Wagoneer SUVs in July and engine fire risks in certain Jeep SUVs and pickup trucks in September.

Owners concerned about safety or vehicle performance can contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for additional support.
