The Rivian R1S has become the first production electric vehicle (EV) to successfully navigate the Rubicon Trail, a notable achievement in the off-road community.

On August 7th, members of Rivian’s test and development team began the challenge at the trail’s Loon Lake entrance at 7:45 am. The trail, which stretches for 12 miles, was completed at the Tahoma staging area by 3:30 pm on August 9th.

The Rubicon Trail is a demanding off-road trail in North America, presenting numerous obstacles and requiring specialized equipment and expertise. The team utilized a Quad-Motor R1S for this venture, which was entirely stock apart from some additional fittings like steel rock sliders, front tow hitch receivers, and a roof rack.

According to the journey’s details, the vehicle started with approximately 80% state of charge and finished with under 10% – enough to reach a nearby level 2 charger. The drive consumed roughly 75% of the total pack energy, equivalent to 3 gallons of gasoline. Supporting the R1S were two pre-production Quad-Motor R1Ts from Rivian’s fleet for the first part of the trip, followed by a modified Jeep Wrangler.

Notably, the R1S did not experience any mechanical failures or tire changes during the trail, though it did sustain some minor cosmetic damage.

Matt Trainham, Rivian Director of Vehicle Testing, commented on the experience, highlighting the importance of sustainable off-roading. Chris Director of the Rubicon Trail Foundation, also acknowledged the R1S’s accomplishment, distinguishing it as the first fully-EV vehicle to complete the trail, even on stock tires.

The completion of the Rubicon Trail by Rivian’s R1S is a significant milestone for both the brand and the EV industry, demonstrating the capability of electric vehicles in off-road conditions. Rivian’s test and development team, trained in advanced off-road driving, fire safety, and Tread Lightly! principles, were instrumental in this successful run.
