In keeping with a theme of electric vehicles, Michigan startup company Rivian announced last Thursday that Amazon has ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans, part of the retailer’s plan to create a fleet of terrifying driverless drones zero emissions vehicles.
Rivian, you will recall, burst into the public consciousness at the L.A. Auto Show last November, seemingly creating a nifty electric pickup out of thin air. in truth, the company has been working feverishly since 2009, the brand’s R1T truck and R1S SUV are definitely targeted at the outdoorsy set.
Our fleet is Electrifying! Thrilled to announce the order of 100,000 electric delivery vehicles – the largest order of electric delivery vehicles ever. Look out for the new vans starting in 2021. pic.twitter.com/y5qYpuy2WP

This fresh round of investment will surely stoke the fires at Rivian even further. Ford plowed half a billion dollars into the company this year, while Cox Automotive ponied up a healthy $350 million. It would seem that Ford hopes to partner in some way with Rivian, perhaps sharing technology such as the ‘skateboard’ Rivian says underpins its vehicles. This is despite the Blue Oval forging ahead with an all-electric F-150, said to be a completely separate project from the Rivian deal.
A hundred thousand delivery vans is a big promise to make for a company that has yet to produce a vehicle for sale to the general public. However, talking heads are suggesting that it is plausible Ford will help out with production in some capacity, considering the newly symbiotic relationship between the two. Initial deliveries are scheduled for 2021 with the whole fleet in place by 2024.
The R1T and R1S are dandy-looking machines, claimed to rocket to 60 mph from rest in under three seconds while wearing meaty tires and bringing some innovate storage solutions to the party. It’ll also apparently be good for a range of 400 miles and a towing capacity of 11,000lbs, although probably not at the same time. Prices are said to start at about $70,000.
