When the 50th BFGoodrich Mint 400 takes on Saturday, March 10, it will be Harley Letner that will lead the way.

Letner managed to run the course in 00:04:33.851, taking first place in the Method Race Wheels Time Trials, beating out the big powerful Trick Trucks. “The tight technical qualifying course worked in my favor,” said Letner. “We love the bragging rights when we beat the trucks, but honestly my goal is to win the 1500 class.”

Starting the race first means that Letner will begin along and get a one minute head start, which means he won’t be dealing with much dust.

Behind Letner, the racers will take off two at a time, side-by-side, and in the second and third spots are RPM Racing teammates Apdaly Lopez and Clyde Stacy. Lopez qualified with the second fastest time overall of 00:04:35.170. Stacy rang in a time of 00:04:36.282.

Sitting in fourth and fifth are two more Trick Trucks, Victor Gruber and Rob Maccachren. Hometown hero Maccachren won the Mint 400 last year for the first time ever, and there’s no doubt he’s hungry for a repeat win.

The course proved challenging for many. The first Trick Truck off the line, driven by Andrew Blood, ended up rolling over, shutting down the course for a while. The 4.4-mile qualifying course included everything the Mint will, including rocks, whoops, silt, high-speed section and washouts.

Bryce Menzies, who qualified seventh, told Off-Road.com that his run was going great until a bump in the last corner popped the front end of the truck, causing him to push wide and lose time.
