In a cutthroat market segment where it is crucially important to have a leg up on the competition through innovation, Ram appears set to unleash a split tailgate on the light truck segment.
We’ve seen pictures of a largely-unclothed 2019 Ram 1500 test mule already but these shots reveal what is sure to have tongues wagging when the new Ram drops in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show in January.

From these pictures, we see a tailgate split vertically in a 60/40 fashion. This could suggest one of two modes of operation: a split drop (like the folding rear seats in a sedan) or a barn door style operation. One thing’s for sure, users will be able to drop the unit as a whole, just like they’ve been able to do since the tailgate was invented sometime last century.
These photos also show what appears to be a RamBox on the test truck, given the profile on the vehicle’s flanks. The tell-tale thick bed rails and the narrow pickup bed are clearly on display on this prototype truck. Our close-up shot shows the RamBox design eliminates intrusion of the wheel wells into the truck bed. There’s now no question that one of the Ram’s truly unique optional design features will soldier on in this all-new pickup.
Like its crosstown rivals at Ford and GM, the next Ram 1500 will likely go on a crash diet, eating a few Lean Cuisines and shedding weight. This approach helps to boost fuel economy and may bump towing capacity if GCWRs remain within shouting distance of the current pickup.
Rumours abound as to the powertrains being plugged into the next Ram 1500, although it’s a safe bet the venerable 5.7L HEMI V8 will stick around for the traditional truck buyer (*raises hand*).
Don’t like the direction of the new Ram 1500? FCA will have an answer for you … in the form of its current bodystyle truck which will remain in production and appear on lots alongside its shiny new brother. During FCA earnings call for the third quarter, Sergio Marchionne disclosed the company will continue making the current Ram through the calendar year 2018. Ram will have the manufacturing capacity to do so thanks to the retooled Sterling Heights Assembly Plant.
Expect to the 2019 Ram 1500 split rear tailgate to be unveiled during Press Preview days at the upcoming North American International Auto Show, January 14-16 in the Motor City.
