There aren’t too many of them out on the road or trail (only 448, according to Jeep), but a Wrangler recall has been announced for 2017 Jeep Wrangler models after the automaker discovered a safety defect related to the fuel tank that was manufactured with a cracked or broken control valve, potentially allowing fuel to leak in the event of a rollover. According to Jeep, the failure can also allow debris to enter the tank or allow it to be overfilled.

Jeep is asking that owners bring in their vehicle for an inspection and possible replacement of the parts. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) first learned of the issue on November 3, which prompted a quick investigation that resulted in an eventual recall. According to Jeep, the failures are due to loose tooling on one of two parallel weld lines at supplier Kautex Textron’s manufacturing facility.

Dealerships will inspect the fuel tank breather tube to determine if the valve has been damaged, and if needed a new fuel tank and sending unit will be replaced. Affected owners should be notified about the Wrangler recall at the start of 2017.
