Jeep unveiled the details on the newest SUV addition to the lineup today for the U.S. market, the 2017 Jeep Compass. Jeep brands the new Compass as “A truly global all-new compact SUV,” as it will be manufactured in Brazil, China, Mexico and India, for consumers in more than 100 countries around the world (part of why we noted they likely switched from Patriot to Compass).

Jeep says the 2017 Compass will be available in four different trim configurations that include Sport, Latitude, Limited and the off-road-focused Trailhawk. There will be two 4×4 systems available on the Compass, including Active Drive, a full-time 4×4 system, and Active Drive Low, which Jeep hails as a “class-exclusive full-time 4×4 system” that boasts a 20:1 crawl ratio. Both systems include the Selec-Terrain system, offering the option to select the ideal traction by choosing between five modes that include Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud and Rock (though the latter is only available on the Trailhawk). Selec-Terrain also includes Selec-Speed Control with Hill-descent Control on Trailhawk models.
Aside from the 20:1 crawl ratio, the Compass Trailhawk also features an increased ride height of nearly an inch, a skid plate, and Jeep signature red front and rear tow hooks. The Trailhawk also features unique fascias that have an improved 30 degree approach angle, 24 degree breakover angle a 34 degree departure angle. More aggressive tires are also featured on the Trailhawk for added traction, and Jeep says it has a water fording capability of 19 inches. The Jeep Compass Trailhawk and tow up to 2,000 lbs.
The North American Compass will be powered by a 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder engine, which Jeep says will provide up to 30 miles per gallon (mpg). The engine will be mated to a class-exclusive nine-speed automatic transmission on 4×4 models, a six-speed on 4×2 autos, and a six-speed manual option is available for 4×2 and 4×4 models.
