The game of will they, won’t they is over. Toyota ended months of speculation by finally confirming an upcoming 2024 Toyota Tacoma with the first of what have become weekly social media teases.
And better news for us: Toyota is using its most off-road-focused models to drum up excitement and dribble out details.
A cryptic first teaser of a dark and distant pickup truck dropped in late March. That was followed quickly by a seemingly innocuous Instagram post showing the current Tacoma in blue. But as the members over at the 4thGenTacoma forum pointed out, there were Easter Eggs aplenty promising something official on April 4.
Taco Tuesday
Toyota didn’t disappoint. On the first of what have become regular Taco Tuesday teasers, we saw our first clear look at the rear of the 2024 Tacoma. The photo shows ‘TRD Pro’ stamped into the tailgate, plus an i-FORCE MAX badge, indicating we’ll see our first hybrid-powered Tacoma.
That first official teaser has since been followed by two more. One confirmed Toyota’s new overlanding trim ‘Trailhuner” will be applied to the new midsize pickup, complete with an ARB steel bumper and recovery hook. And most recently, that the TRD Pro trucks will come with FOX shocks and disc brakes in the rear — a first for the Tacoma, if you can believe it.
The long-serving 3rd-generation Tacoma is loved by the off-road community. That’s thanks to its reliability, solid construction, and massive catalogue of off-roading parts and accessories. It’s clear Toyota is planning something special for the 4th-generation Tacoma, with packages aimed at serious off-roaders, and back-country campers alike. And Toyota’s long history with hybrid technology has us curious about the kind of power and fuel savings we’ll see on the new truck.
As for exactly when the 2024 Toyota Tacoma will finally debut, that’s a mystery we hope future Taco Tuesday teasers reveal.
