It’s been some 24 years since the last Bronco rolled off the assembly line, but at long last the Bronco is back. The 2021 Ford Bronco is available in both two- and four-door configurations, as well as a more compact Bronco Sport, which we will touch on in a separate article. Production is set to begin early in 2021.
“We created the Bronco family to elevate every aspect of off-road adventure and equipped them with class-leading chassis hardware and exclusive technologies to raise the bar in the rugged 4×4 segment and take people further into the wild,” said Jim Farley, Ford chief operating officer. “They’re built with the toughness of an F-Series truck and performance spirit of Mustang – and come wrapped in one of the most stunning and functional off-road designs that’s true to the original Bronco design DNA.”
Both the two- and four-door Broncos are ready for open air exploration. Two-door models come with a standard three-section roof system (left and right front section and rear section) and an optional premium painted modular top with four sections that adds a removable panel over the rear seats and cargo area. Four-seat models have four removable roof sections (left and right front panels, full-width center panel, and rear section). As well, all modular hardtop models have rear quarter windows that are easy to remove without removing the roof panels. A cloth soft top is standard on four-door models and it features a tilt-up function.
Also, every Bronco comes with frameless doors that make them easy to remove. On four-door Broncos, all four doors can be stored onboard with protective door bags.
The new Broncos are powered by Ford EcoBoost – either a 2.3L four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.7L V6 with 310 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The small engine is mated to a 7-speed manual transmission, while a 10-speed automatic transmission is available on the larger 2.7L EcoBoost.
As you would expect, every new Bronco is designed with the off-road in mind and has the technology to help drivers explore new terrain.
“Bronco’s advanced four-wheel-drive technology is at the core of its off-road capabilities, and at the heart of it all is Bronco’s exclusive Terrain Management System with G.O.A.T. Modes that is designed to help drivers better navigate any type of terrain,” said Mark Grueber, Bronco consumer marketing manager.
Up to seven driver-selectable G.O.A.T. modes are available, which include Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery and Sand, along with Baja, Mud/Ruts and Rock Crawl for more extreme off-road exploration.
Ford offers two 4×4 systems on the new Bronco models – base and advanced.
“The base system utilizes a two-speed electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case, while the optional advanced system features a two-speed electromechanical transfer case that adds an auto mode for on-demand engagement to select between 2H and 4H,” Ford says in a release. “Power is distributed to a Dana 44 AdvanTEK solid rear axle and Dana AdvanTEK independent front differential unit – both with available Spicer Performa-TraK electronic locking differentials for improved traction over rough terrain.”
As for suspension, each 2021 Ford Bronco is outfitted with independent front suspension and a solid-axle rear suspension featuring coil springs with five locating links.
You can get added ground clearance with available 35-inch tires on every trim level (optional), along with optional beadlock-capable wheels.
A total of seven different trim levels of the 2021 Ford Bronco two- and four-door models are available, each outfitted with different levels of standard and optional equipment. Base price for the two-door Bronco is $29,995, while the four-door base price is $34,695.
