Ram hauls out a name from its past: Warlock!
FCA has a fantastic habit of dragging old names from their pages of history, then applying them to modern machines. It’s latest? The Ram Warlock.
If the name sounds familiar, it should. Warlock appeared on pickup trucks targeted at a younger audience, shod with snazzy wheels and oak trim (hey, it was the ‘70s). This time around, Ram seeks to turn a similar trick while shrewdly using up a cache of parts that fit the last-gen 1500 pickup.
Unveiled and uncloaked at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, the Warlock is a crafty brew of desirable options and equipment, all wrapped in a package which pays homage to the original Warlock trucks of the 1970s.
Warlock features a black grille sourced from the Ram Rebel, complete with the billboard R A M lettering. Semi-gloss black aluminum wheels are wrapped in 20-inch Goodyears and match well with the front and rear powder coated bumpers. A 1-inch factory lift and black wheel flares round out the aggro look.
Attentive readers will note the ‘Classic’ badge appended to the paragraph of letters on the Ram’s front doors, along with a smattering of hood decals and Warlock decals on the bedsides. The sport-style hood is optional but LED lighting is standard. This trim will be available as a 4×4 Quad Cab with the 6’4” cargo box or in a Crew Cab 4×4 with the short 5’7” pan. Both the Pentastar V6 and Hemi V8 will be available … but are you really going to buy a truck with aggro looks and a cool name only to settle for just six cylinders under the hood? Our hearty recommendation: pop for the Hemi.
It’s a dandy and clever way to consume a bunch of parts that only fit the Ram 1500 Classic body style while getting the most out of that model’s contribution to bottom line sales numbers. These types of special editions essentially cost the company nothing, since the truck’s tooling at the Warren plant is long paid for and these parts need to be used up in some form or another before the last-gen Ram disappears for good. If awesome tributes like this Warlock are the result, then your humble author is all for it.
Look for Warlock to fly onto dealer lots near the end of March.
