Atlis promises a powerful, all-electric, dual rear-wheel pickup.

The electric pickup truck segment is currently littered with start-up companies, ranging from Bollinger to Rivian. Unsurprisingly, Tesla wants in as well. Given the ability of an EV powertrain to provide gobs of torque essentially the instant it starts rolling, electrification actually makes more than a bit of sense for heavy grunt work. The major piece of the puzzle has been, and continues to be, total range and recharging time

Atlis XT

Atlis claims to have that particular vexation figured out. The company says that the most stout of its XT Pickup line will be good for 500 miles of range, about the same distance a traditional gasoline-powered truck can get on a single tank of fuel. Entry-level models will be able to travel 300 miles on a single charge of electrons. They also say the rig can be fully recharged in as little as 15 minutes, provided drivers use the company’s proprietary charging system. It’ll be compatible with today’s charging plugs as well.

The spellcheck-paralyzing Atlis Motor Vehicles hasn’t provided specific power figures but does promise the XT will be able to rival the brawniest of Detroit’s heavy duty pickups. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing GCWR is listed as an astonishing 35,000lbs, with payload ratings topping out at the 5,000lb mark. Key to these towing figures is the ability of the XT to be configured as a dual rear-wheel rig, one which they hope will be capable of maintaining 65mph at maximum GCWR while travelling up a 6 percent grade.

XT’s powertrain is built to independently control power delivery and braking of each wheel, leveraging four drive motors with a direct drive to each wheel. This means the XT is four-wheel drive, naturally. Hove underneath is an independent rear suspension rather than a traditional log. Air springs help level the load. That’s the front cargo area shown above, by the way, and it does indeed have a tailgate (frontgate?).

An optional off-road package is in the works, offering “long-travel” with no less than fifteen inches of ground clearance, up from the standard twelve inches. Unsurprisingly, the prodigious towing numbers mentioned above won’t be possible with the off-road gear.

The business end of the truck will be equipped with either a 6.5ft or 8ft bed; the latter comes as standard if the truck is spec’d as a dually. Cabins will be a selection of extended cab or four-door crew cab, both with bench seats. Its interior is appropriately techy, with giant screens and a futuristic look.

Atlis promises the truck will appear in 2020.
