Judging by most reactions, HD now stands for “Heavy Derpy”.
Chevy has unleashed photos of its new Silverado HD pickup, choosing to kick things off with a version that bore an alarming new face. Today, they followed that effort up with a High Country trim which tones things down a bit.
As we’ve done in the past for notable new machines, we’ve donned out hazmat suit and waded through the sewers of internet comments to find out what keyboard warriors think of the new 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD.
“I’ve never been a fan of low-oriented headlights,” said commenter Darthineus over on our sister site, AutoGuide. Your author shares this opinion, listing amongst the reasons for never taking to the old Nissan Juke. Commenter K.C., presumably a fan of Star Trek: Voyager, opined “It’ll be good for the Hunt, the Hirogen will love it.”
On the cesspool website known as Reddit, the creatively named Squidloaf77 thinks the headlights look “Frankensteined together”. Another commenter called the front end “too busy and not streamlined.”
If user Matt951207 isn’t a clairvoyant then he should look into that career, foretelling the photos of today’s High Country by saying “Hopefully other trims look better.” Fortunately, they do.
The court of public opinion wasn’t a total wash for Chevy, with many users on Reddit thinking everything aft of the headlights on the 2020 Silverado HD looks just fine. Comments included “Looks amazing, aside from the awful front end,” and “Body lines are good.”
Delving into comment sections just isn’t complete without visiting fan forums, often filled with rabid fans and hater trolls alike. At the site SilveradoSierra.com under the discussion board, unkind parallels were made to the “Aztec” [sic], base work truck models of the original Colorado pickup, and National Lampoon’s Family Truckster. One commenter evoked Happy Days by declaring Chevy Trucks to have “jumped the shark”.
Following the initial shock of That Grille, some folks started to come around to the look, which may have been GM’s plan all along. Fan renderings which gave the 2020 HD a brodozer treatment were met with a measure of goodwill, especially the image that endowed the grille with a contrasting color in the CHEVROLET grille text.
Today’s announcement of the High Country truck, shown at the top of this post, marks the second of what will be a total of five trims – Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country. Given the Custom trim features a text-based grille on the half-ton Chevy, its logical to speculate that trim may also have a similar grille to the LT shown yesterday.
If Chevy follows the styling patterns it set out for the 1500, expect the Heavy Duty LT and LTZ trims to have a logo-based grille like this High County but with slightly less bling.
