With one month left in the calendar year, a familiar refrain is sung by automakers: y’all like trucks.
Surprising no one, the Ford F-Series tops America’s list of best-selling pickups for the umpteenth month in a row. To be precise, it is the ninth consecutive month the company has sold more than 70,000 F-Series trucks. Their average transaction price was about $47,000 per pickup. Also worth noting is a stunning 73.7% gain for Navigator so far this year which speaks to just how good that thing is, especially in high-zoot Reserve and Black Label trims.
Ram is enjoying the benefits of sorting out production issues for the new 1500 pickup, as its November volume jumped over 40% compared to last year. Had things gone as planned, this level of sales would have started much earlier in 2018. As it stands, Ram has sold 21,009 more pickups this year than last. Keep in mind that figure counts both the new Ram 1500 and the old Ram 1500 Classic being sold alongside for the time being.
Jeep is a license to print money, with the Wrangler up 20% last month and 25% this year. In fact, the brand will come tantalizingly close to selling a full quarter million Wranglers this year. Through to the end of November, 220,232 have been sold. The entire brand will be darn close to a million units this year, too. With the Gladiator coming online in 2019, providing extra sales numbers and that all-important buzz, 2019 is looking like the year Jeep will join the Seven Figure Club.
How many trucks GM sold is anybody’s guess, since the company no longer deems us worthy of monthly sales reports. We’ll find out more from The General after year’s end.
At Toyota, customers continue to buy Tacoma pickups at a rapid rate. It’s rise in volume mirrors that of the Wrangler, in fact. Its big-brother Tundra, meanwhile, remains roughly flat, selling at less than half the pace.
Nissan is enjoying similar fortunes with its mid-size pickup. The Frontier continues to sell extremely well even though the thing is almost old enough to vote. It’s rock-bottom price of entry at just $18,990 surely helps but it is important to note that Nissan isn’t exactly letting the thing die on the vine. For 2019, base Frontier pickups earn infotainment upgrades and the new Midnight Edition is said to be popular as well.
Our next Tracking Trucks will be a year-end wrap up. Stay tuned to find out how all the major players performed in 2018.
