These styling kits make us want a Suzuki Jimny even more.
It’s no secret we’re fans of the diminutive Jimny here at Off-Road.com. You probably are too. It’s a rugged little pug of a thing, with t-square styling and dimensions that allow it to go just about anywhere. Sure, it’s only powered by a tiny engine but considering its weight is about equal to that of a coffee cup, 1.5L of displacement is more than enough.
A company in Japan has decided to take it upon itself to make a couple of body kits for the Jimny, turning the Suzuki into miniature versions of the Defender and G-Wagen. Dream Automotive Design and Development, with the unfortunate acronym of DAMD, is showing off a couple of kits they’re promising will be available next year.
The mini G-Wagen takes the Mercedes styling cues and scales them to 5/8 size, complete with vertical LED turn signals framing the round front headlights and the G’s styling spear running the length of the trucklet. The rear seems to deploy the Jimny’s stock tail lights which actually do a great job of meshing with the G’s styling cues. They’re calling it the Little G, which is fine.
Less fine is their decision to call their other kit the, erm, Little D. That kit gives the Jimny all the styling cues of a Land Rover Defender, complete with a flared hood, Defender-style front illumination, and a rear bumper/spare tire combination that could pass for the real thing. Interested buyers take note: LITTLE D is spelled out in block letters along the hood’s lip, where Land Rover would otherwise place the Defender name.
The new Jimny is a dandy little ladder frame rig with 3-link rigid axle suspensions and 4WD with a low-range transfer gear. It has 8.3 inches of ground clearance, a 49-degree departure angle, and a 37-degree angle of attack. Breakover is measured at 28 degrees. It measures just 137 inches in length on a 88.5-inch wheelbase. For comparison, a 2-door JK Wrangler checks in at 164-inches and 95.4 inches respectively.
Nothing is firmed up for these kits in terms of price, with DAMD saying details will be delivered “as soon as it is decided”.
