The Lucas Oil Off-Road madness visited Utah this past weekend, treating fans to mud-slinging action and championship excitement.
Some of the overall points races got a lot tighter at the track in tough-to-spell Tooele, Utah. Modified Karts kicked off Saturday’s action, with Connor Barry going for a wild and scary tumble right off the bat on Lap 1. The confab made for a six-kart pileup and while all hands were relatively unscathed, race organizers made the call to restart the race.
Other rollovers and caution laps led many to think the race would be called on time but officials decided to let the competitors go the distance. At the stripe, it was Brody Eggleston who earned a big win, as well as the points lead, in the #514 Above All Construction/Walker Evans Racing kart. His chief protagonist in points, Mason Prater, spun and stalled his kart earlier in the race and had to be towed off the track.
A stacked field of always-entertaining Production 1000 UTV machines took to the track on both Friday and Saturday, with Race 1 winner Myles Cheek leading the pack through lap 1 of the weekend’s second race in his #957 Walker Evans Racing/CMI Precision Machining Polaris. A full course caution fell on lap ten after the entire right rear tire and wheel of Ryan Lindsay’s UTV went skyward, necessitating a restart once his machine was scooped up by track officials.
Race control apparently didn’t like the looks of that restart, so they made all the drivers sit on the proverbial naughty step and re-group to give it a second try. The top five racers held their positions over the final three laps with Cheek taking the win and the sweep of the weekend. Nathan Barry and his Yamaha was second, while points leader and defending champion Brock Heger wound up third.
The big-dog Pro 4 Trucks took to the dirt both Friday and Saturday, but it was in the latter race that previous night’s winner Doug Mittag got sideways going over the tabletop on the opening lap. Despite best efforts to straighten it out, his truck dug in after nosing the k-rail on landing, rolling three times. Safety crews worked quickly to get him righted and, despite driving a truck that now looked like wet tissue paper, Mittag was able to continue but went down a lap after checking into the Hot Pits to change a flat.
On lap 11, Adrian Cenni rolled in turn five, but landed on his wheels and was able to continue. In the end, it was four-time defending champion Kyle LeDuc who bagged the win, his second of the season. Points leader RJ Anderson now holds just a four point lead over Mittag, who himself is just six point up on LeDuc.
Rounds 9 and 10 of this year’s Lucas Oil Off-Road Series will happen under the lights in a month’s time at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California.
