Outfitting your Jeep or off-road truck with an aftermarket bumper can add a whole lot of utility. A couple things to think about before making your purchase include: whether or not you want a winch, if you’re going to add auxiliary lights on the bumper, and how far you want your new bumper to span the front end (some only extend out to the end of the frame rails while some go to the outside of the flared fenders). Before you purchase your bumper, it is likely you do a lot of research to find answers to those questions. In your research, you’ll also come across something called a Grumper, and if you’re like most of us and haven’t seen that word before, you’ll think to yourself, “What is a Grumper?”
What is a Grumper?
Well, we are here to answer all the questions you have about a Grumper and what it really is. So, let’s get started…
Fab Fours is a company that started with a couple friends making parts for their off-road vehicles. In case you haven’t heard of the South Carolina-based company, we’ll tell you that they make all kinds of aftermarket accessories for Jeeps, trucks, SUVs, and other vehicles, and you can find their parts at aftermarket shops and big retail stores.
In trying to push the envelope with their products and come up with something truly new and unique for their Jeep product line, Fab Fours came up with the idea to bridge the gap between the Jeep grille and front bumper by creating one unified piece of metal art called the Grumper. Grille + Bumper = Grumper. Easy, right?!
In tradition to Fab Fours’ edgy product style (if you haven’t seen some of their SEMA builds, then you should Google search “Fab Fours SEMA builds” for some serious eye candy), the Grumper throws tradition out the window and creates an edgy, menacing product facade that looks mean and is built to take on the world of off-road.

The Grumper not only looks one-of-a-kind, but it is also functional, and that’s what the team at Fab Fours was going for when they developed this product for the Jeep Wrangler. A Grumper comes in 2 different styles: either full width or standard, the latter of which leaves a full view of the front tires but still molds the grille and bumper components together in a unique and eye-catching way.
Possibly the coolest thing about a Grumper is the fact that you can customize it with different color inserts in 4 places. The “angry eye headlight” cutouts also give it a mean look, and if you choose to pair your Jeep Wrangler Grumper with customized headlights, then the aggressive look is only enhanced.
Build quality is what you would expect out of any accessory bumper system on the market – stout .11 gauge steel is used and Grumpers are finished with a 2-stage matte black powder coat. In total, the standard Grumper weights in at 70 lbs, and the full-width Jeep Grumper weighs in at 75 pounds.
Choosing which Grumper you want on your Jeep or truck all depends on what kind of off-roading you do and how you want your vehicle to look going down the road. The standard Grumper will have all of the tire clearance you could ever imagine, while the full-width Grumper will see limitations with the bigger the tire you put on your vehicle. One of the best parts about a Grumper, no matter which one you choose, is that it protects the radiator better than you could ever imagine with a standard grille by placing the air inlets much farther out away from the radiator.
And, yes, Grumpers are also available for trucks! Included in the product lineup are Grumpers for the Ford Super Duty, Chevy HD, and Dodge/Ram 2500-5500.
A Grumper wouldn’t be complete without the ability to add accessories, like lights or a proven WARN Zeon 10 winch. Add a Factor 55 Ultrahook on the outside for safe winching and you really have yourself a slick setup.
A Grumper may just be a glorified bumper/grille combo, but it is a very well engineered and magnificent product that makes it more than just a glorified afterthought for recreation. We hope this helps you answer the question “What is a Grumper” so that you’re more informed next time you shop. Enjoy!
