Standing Beauty-0557

In what is becoming an alarmingly popular feature, we dust off our corporate hazmat suit (standard company issue at Off-Road.com) and wade through the minefield of internet comments for a trendy new off-road machine.

Unless you’ve been living under an especially big rock for the last week, you’ll know that Mahindra finally launched a vehicle in the US … but not in the way most expected. The ROXOR is a 62-horsepower, diesel-fuelled, off-road only entrant into the side-by-side market. So while it might look like a Jeep, the ROXOR is not street legal and this SxS is like nothing else on the market. The internet, predictably, exploded with reaction.

Right here on Off-Road.com, the reaction was swift. Some, such as reader “Joe,” who railed against any machine offering only 62 hp. “Who is going to buy ANY Vehicle in 2018 with 62 Horsepower and top speed of 45 mph? Why don’t they put at minimum 150 hp so it can go 65 on interstate?” This completely misses the point of the ROXOR, which is an off-road only trucklet not permitted on any road, let alone the interstate, a point laboriously made in Steve’s post. Joe – please contact us at your leisure for reading comprehension lessons.

Others, like reader Dale, were quick and right to pillory Joe, explaining “Joe..this is a side by side UTV, not a regular ‘vehicle’. Have you seen the prices on UTV’s? This is a much better made option for folks who aren’t stupid enough to try and drive 100mph offroad.” Thank you, Dale. Dale then goes on to say, “Myself..I just buy Ford Escapes and Suzuki Samurai’s for around $2000 apiece..when one tears up, we have parts for the next one.” We can’t really argue with that purchasing plan.

Readers named Stan, Floyd, Rob, and Ed also chimed in to deride “Joe” and his inability to decipher the off-road only missives clearly made in the post. For that, gentlemen, we thank you. Floyd goes on to make the good point that WWII Jeeps, on which the ROXOR is based, also had a top speed of only 45mph.

Over on YouTube, always a glorious morass of self-introspection and commenters shouting into the wind, the reaction was surprisingly positive. Viewer ‘LSanti’ said, “I’d take this over any other side by side anyway. Now if it could only be made street legal.” This makes the very good point of how DMVs across the nation will indubitably have to deal with wankers who affix janky CJ-2A VINs to ROXORs and try to pass them off as Jeeps.

Creatively-named Youtuber ‘earlwed’ simply opined, “Diesel, manual trans, disc brakes…SOLD.” I mean, they’re teacup-sized discs, but sure. We like the spec, too. The incomprehensibly-titled user ‘gaddam bhargavareddy’ pointed out buyers of the ROXOR will be able to swap many Jeep CJ parts onto their new 62hp off-road machine. We are anxious to see if that’s correct. If so, opportunities abound.

The sewer conversation on Reddit proved the limited literacy capabilities of several keyboard warriors, with ‘RichardCabezo’ saying, “Base model will be 15000 US dollars. With options it said it could be almost double that.” This statement flies in the face of every article, including our own, carefully explaining the ROXOR features a base price of $15,499 and topping out just north of $18,000. Back to basic math for you, RichardCabezo.

GlamRockDave, despite not providing a shred of evidence that he is a fancy-pants patent lawyer, shouted, “But no way is Chrysler going to allow that design to be sold in the US without lawsuits.” Redditors quickly corrected him by explaining how Mahindra has been building the Willys Jeep under license since 1947. Hilariously, GlamRockDave doubled down by saying, “I’m quite sure that license doesn’t extend to sales in the US though.” Sigh. It does, Dave.

At our siste site, The Truth About Cars, their hyper-active commentariat were quick to opine as well. Reader ‘EquipmentJunkie’ said, “A workingman’s alternative to a side-by-side or a heavy-duty UTV. Mahindra knows what they are doing in this market.” Fair point. ‘Russcycle’ was incredulous that the ROXOR has “No doors, no roof, no glass, and it weighs 3000 pounds?” He makes a fair point, too.

But we’ll save the best for last, as ‘Stanley Steamer’ suggested that SCORE should start an off-road race series with this thing (awesome idea!) while ‘PrincipalDan’ observed that every doomsday prepper should have a ROXOR in their hillside bunker.

And with that, we’ll hang up our internet hazmat suit once again. We are, however, keeping it handy for reader reactions to the next big off-road reveal.
