Top-5-Resale

Resale value should certainly be a consideration when it comes time to buy a new vehicle, and if you’re shopping for something off-road ready, you’re in luck.

That’s because every vehicle featured on the 2018 best resale value list from Kelley Blue Book (KBB) includes four-wheel drive and decent ground clearance. If you’ve ever shopped on the used market for any of these vehicles, the list probably won’t come as news to you, and though the initial price of purchase might be high, if you buy one of these you’re bound to get your money back.

On average, KBB says that a new vehicle will be worth 33 percent of its original sticker price after 60 months of ownership, but every vehicle on this list returns over half of its value after the same time period. It’s that reason why these vehicles can end up saving a buyer money in the long run.

The resale value is calculated by taking “into account current vehicle data, sales data, market conditions for each vehicle, competition within vehicle segments, expectations of the future economy and the combined experience of Kelley Blue Book’s team of market and pricing analysts.”

5. GMC Sierra

Edging out its brother the Chevy Silverado by one spot, the 2018 GMC Sierra takes the fifth spot on the resale list. It may not outsell the Silverado in the United States, but if you want to hold onto your value, go GMC.

This truck will be worth 58.4 percent of its total value after 36 months and 51.9 percent of 60 months.

4. Jeep Wrangler

In the fourth spot is a perennial off-road favorite, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. This is easily the most off-road capable vehicle on the list straight out of the box, which is good news for people looking at the new Wrangler as a potential option.

Now, it’s not the best news if you’re shopping for a used Wrangler, but if you can afford to pick one up, you’ll be cashing in when it comes time to sell.

A 2018 Wrangler will be worth 65.2 percent of its total value after 36 months and 54.1 percent after 60 months.

3. Toyota 4Runner

And now we start with the Toyotas. Anyone who has watched resale value already knows that Toyota reigns supreme, and this year is no different. In the third spot is the Toyota 4Runner, one of the few body-on-frame SUVs left on the market.

After 36 months of ownership, a 2018 4Runner will be worth 65.8 percent of its total value, while after 60 months it will be worth 54.2 percent.

2. Toyota Tundra

In the second spot is the larger of the Toyota truck twins, the Tundra. This half-ton is aging next to its competition from the Detroit Three, but it consistently scores better than the domestic pickups on the resale value list.

After 36 months, you’ll be able to sell your 2018 Tundra for 64.7 percent of its original value, while after 60 months the truck will be worth 54.2 percent.

1. Toyota Tacoma

Coming as a surprise to no one who pays attention to resale value lists, the Toyota Tacoma still returns the most money back to its owner after years of ownership. This is now the fourth year in a row that the Tacoma has topped the list from KBB, easily beating out its midsize rivals the Chevy Colorado and Honda Ridgeline which land at spots eight and nine on the list respectively.

After 36 months the Tacoma will be worth 69.6 percent of its total value. But the real impressive number is after 60 months, the Tacoma will still be worth 61.1 percent of its original value. Doing some quick math shows the numbers. If you bought a Tacoma for $30,000, 60 months later (which is five years!) it would be worth $18,330.
