Chevy has rolled out the 2019 Silverado just before the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, revealing the truck will be available with a new 3.0-liter diesel engine.
Numbers for the diesel were not released at the event, but Chevy did say that the diesel in the Silverado will outperform the new diesel in the Ford F-150, which is rated at 440 lb-ft of torque and 225 horsepower.
Besides the new diesel engine, the Silverado will be available with new versions of the 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8, power numbers for which are also in the dark. One of the major updates for the gas engines will be a cylinder deactivation system that can shut down anywhere from one to seven cylinders at any time to save fuel. A new 10-speed automatic transmission will be available with those engines.

Fuel economy enhancements have come in a number of areas besides the engines. Chevy says that the new Silverado lost 450 pounds on average thanks mainly to a mixed material approach which uses seven different grades of steel in the cab structure, mainly high-strength steel in the frame and the bed, and aluminum for the doors, hood and tailgate. Aerodynamics have been improved by about 7 percent.
For the off-road enthusiast, a new Trail Boss model has already been shown which will come from the factory with all the Z71 goodies plus a 2-inch lift kit.
Eight trim levels will be available with the new Silverado, all of which will have new storage options in the form of bins in the second-row seatbacks and a large storage tray under the second row of seats. Overall size has been increased in the back as well, with crew cab models offering 44.5-inches of front legroom and 43.8-inches of rear legroom.
For connectivity, the Silverado will continue to offer 4G LTE WiFi, Apple CarPlay, Android auto, OnStar and more.
In the back, Chevy has made its bed floor wider by seven inches, allowing the bed on the Silverado to offer 63 cubic feet of volume, about 20 percent more than the competition. In-bed storage boxes are now available as well, tucked into the bed walls.
More numbers on the 2019 Silverado will be revealed in the coming months.
