Dakar MINI Buggy

The team of Bryce Menzies and Peter Mortensen suffered a heavy crash four miles into the Dakar Rally’s 166-mile second stage.

Fortunately, Menzies is reported to be unhurt while his co-driver is dealing with a broken ankle. Their race-prepped MINI sustained extremely heavy damage.

On Saturday’s first stage, Menzies finished a healthy fourth overall, a single spot ahead of his teammates Nani Roma and Alex Haro Bravo, and about 40 seconds behind leader Nasser Al-Attiyah who has a brace of Dakar wins under his belt.

Menzies has extensive off-road racing experience and was seen as the best chance for an American name to appear on this year’s Dakar podium.

According to the X-Raid Team account on Twitter, both Menzies and Mortensen have returned to the bivouac, which is the team’s temporary camp. This likely means they are dropping out of the race due to the damage sustained on their race vehicle.

Here is video footage of the accident, which shows Bryce hitting a jump with too much speed, sending the MINI end over end.

You may recall that Menzies was set to participate in last year’s Dakar but was forced to withdraw thanks to a misfortune while setting the world record for a truck jump. Recently, he has turned his talents to desert racing, competing in this year’s Baja 1000. Menzies was leading the Baja at a number of occasions before various calamities conspired to plunk him in 11th place.

The 2018 Dakar has fourteen stages, kicking off with a Lima/Pisco stage and finishing with a looped route in the Argentinian region of Córdoba on the 20th of January. The Dakar Rally takes competitors through Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Yes, that’s correct – none of the race actually takes place in Dakar. Since 2009, it has been moved from Africa to South America because of security concerns in some of the countries in which the racers were travelling. The original Paris-Dakar route was abandoned in 2001.
