We were treated with the debut of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL today, but that wasn’t the only major announcement to come from the automaker.

During the presentation for the Wrangler JL, Jeep brand boss Mike Manley revealed the automaker plans to roll out a plug-in hybrid version of the SUV for the 2020 model year. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a hybrid Jeep Wrangler, but it is confirmation that there will be a plug-in hybrid version and the timeline for its arrival.

Jeep has declined to elaborate on the plug-in Wrangler, but a look at other products in Fiat Chrysler’s portfolio gives us a rough idea of what to expect. While it would make sense for the hybrid vehicle to use the less thirsty 2.0-liter engine, Fiat Chrysler already has a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. The minivan is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 with an Atkinson cycle, which is joined by an electric motor and a 16 kWh battery providing 33-miles of pure electric range.

Whatever’s in store for this plug-in Jeep, we’ll still have to wait a couple of years before we see it. For now, consumers will likely be more than happy with the Wrangler JL and its three different powertrains.
