Even in camouflage, it’s easy to see that little will change with the overall look of the Mercedes G-Class when the redesigned version arrives, but plenty of significant changes are planned under the skin. 

In this most recent set of spy photos, we get a clear look at the new LEDs that will be used on both the standard G-Class model as well as the G63 AMG performance variant.

The clearest difference between the two prototypes is the massive grille covering on the AMG model, while side exit exhaust is also seen on the G63. That nose is expected to feature a version of the Panamericana grille that’s coming to all AMG models, similar to what is seen on the GLC 63.

Four inches of width will be added to the new model to accommodate passengers better inside, while the interior is being entirely reworked and is likely to include the latest in technology from Mercedes, including a digital gauge cluster. Luckily, the G-Class’ three locking differentials, low-range gearing, and body-on-frame construction aren’t going anywhere, although there is one change coming that could slow down this Mercedes off road: independent suspension.

The front suspension will be going independent, though the rear will remain a solid axle, an effort to help the G-Class handle better on the pavement. Despite that, Mercedes is set on keeping the G-Class as an off-roader, so we’re sure the brand will keep it capable.

Under the hood a new turbocharged six-cylinder engine will provide power for non-AMG models while those powerhouses will get a turbocharged V8.

There’s also a rumor that Mercedes will continue to build the current G-Class alongside the new model to offer a simpler, cheaper version of the SUV.
