Late last year we came across a trademark filing for “Toyota FT-4X.” The trademarked was placed for automobiles and structural parts thereof, and we speculated at the time the name sure sounds like a possible 4×4. Toyota has used the “FT” moniker before, which has typically stood for Future Toyota. The FT tag and the 4X tag sure sounds like a potential 4×4, though we still have no other information other than the name (and the above teaser image). When pressed about what this new model might be months ago, Toyota representatives were mum on the topic.
Now we know Toyota definitely is showing off the FT-4X concept next month at the New York International Auto Show, though we still don’t have any confirmation about what it is and whether it will be a four-wheeling machine. Is it a FJ Cruiser replacement, a one-off dream rig, or maybe just something to take a current platform to the next level? We have no idea at this point, and the teaser image doesn’t do much to help us – though the tires a at least more aggressive than a pure road tire, so we’re thinking the 4×4 angle isn’t too far off.
We’ll know soon enough, as Toyota will be streaming the unveil of the vehicle in New York on April 12th at 6:10 a.m. PST. The steam can be found here: https://livestream.com/Toyota/NY2017.
