Although more details are said to be announced on March 1, today Land Rover is giving us a first look today at a new model called the Range Rover Velar. The name of this new SUV, which the company says will sit between the Evoque and the Sport, actually comes from original Range Rover prototypes from 1969, as the original model was unveiled a year later in 1970.
The Velar is described in a press release as an SUV that display “elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach and all-new consumer technologies.” Range Rover goes on to note that it uses sustainable materials that are paired with advanced engineering.
“We call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover,” Land Rover Chief Design Officer Gerry McGovern said. “It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”
Range Rover’s use of the name Velar for early prototypes as a way to try and hide the identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rover vehicles. The name Velar was used since the Latin meaning of the word ‘velare’ is something to veil or cover.
