Fabs Fours has built some wild concept builds in the past, but the Kymera might take the cake. Based on a 2015 Colorado, the truck was one of the many vehicles the company owned that was just sitting in its warehouse. Fab Fours CEO Greg Higgs was struck with an idea for the truck after pushing some oversized tires past it one day. He went back and sketched out his idea… and from there, Kymera was born.
A Chimera in Greek Mythology was a fire-breathing creature that was a blend of a Lion, goat and snake, and essentially Fab Four set out to build the automotive version of the hybrid monster. After talking with the team, here’s five of the key reasons this truck is a true off-road monster.
Chopped Top
One of the first things Higgs envisioned was a chopped-top truck. After sketching out the idea, the team went to work trimming a few inches off of the top of the truck, and the mohawk styling was added after the fact to help give the truck a signature look.
Motor in the Bed
From the get-go, the plan was to have a rear-engine build with the motor in the bed of the truck. According to Higgs, the original plan was to use a twin-turbo gas engine, but that idea shifted over to a twin-turbo 5.9L Cummins 12-valve diesel engine instead. This beastly engine makes about 650 horsepower, with the exhaust for the monster mounted up in the bed like a cannon or an afterburner.
Monster Tires
Rolling a set of oversized tires by the somewhat forgotten 2015 Colorado in his shop is what gave Higgs the idea of Kymera, so big, bold rubber was always in the plans for this truck. Fab Fours put 405/70R20 Alliance tires on Kymera. To aid in stopping the beast, they machined down the rotors to squeeze in 1-ton brakes for added stopping power.
Massive Axles
Supporting the added weight of the twin-turbo Cummins and making the truck tough as nails is key, so AxleTech 5.5-ton MRAP axles are employed on Kymera. There’s nothing like some military-grade axles on a mid-size truck to really push it over the top!
Massive Fox Shocks
There are so many unique aspects to this truck that it’s hard to pinpoint just a few, but one unique thing Fab Fours did with the suspension is essentially use Fox’s largest rear bypass shock – designed for a Trophy Truck – and run it up front. So massive Fox bypass shocks are used both front and rear on the Kymera. It also four-wheel steering as well for that added precision for rock-crawling.
