We expect that the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4² will not compete with the Jeep Wrangler JK in terms of price (as it should be far more expensive), but by the look of the supplied press photos it sure looks like it will be able to compete with it on the roughest terrain.

Designed to be the most capable G-Class ever, the G550 4×4² sits on portal axles to provides with over 17 inches of ground clearance. For serious traction in off-road terrain, the G550 4×4² features all-wheel drive and is fitted with three locking differentials. The the G-Class SUV will be powered by a 4.0-liter Biturbo V8 engine that Mercedes says will provide 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

Mercedes also will tout an impressive suspension system that features dual springs and damper struts, and although Mercedes doesn’t provide any travel number is does claim to offer a great deal of suspension travel. Although suspension geometry, steering connections and drive shafts will mimic the other G-Class models, the portal axles really set the G550 4×4² apart in its lineup, as the unique portal axle design essentially help raise the chassis higher off the ground.

We have no idea how much this beat will cost, but we expect pricing for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4² to be announced closer to launch in early next year.
