(Agua Dulce, Calif.): Bob “The Weatherman” Steinberger will be Grand Marshal of the 2016 NORRA, Mexican 1000. The voice on the other end of the radio for many years, Bob has been a part of off-road racing since chasing for Bill Stroppe at the Baja 1000 back in 1972. He spent days waiting in the desert without any word from the team until the truck arrived. It motivated him to adapt two-way communications for desert racing.
The following year, Stroppe, Team MacPherson and Walker Evans all had PCI, two-way radios. Inducted into the Off Road Motorsports Hall Of Fame in 2013, Steinberger has given many a stranded racer hope that someone, somehow, will be coming for them. Many lives have been saved and races salvaged thanks to Steinberger’s tireless efforts to bring communications to the Baja Peninsula.
Steinberger also volunteers doing recovery operations in his distinctive Jeep at desert racing events in the States. Bob has been an ambassador of the sport for decades and is a great addition to a distinctive list of NORRA Grand Marshalls.
