Christensen said he will try to take a nap (well, probably not sleep he said, but at least close his eyes) in the afternoon once all the chase teams have left for their locations. Depending upon where Schwarz is at in the standings will determine how Christensen approaches the last 500 miles. If they are close, he will push hard, and if not, the idea is to make sure to finish the race.
“My hope is that he’s going to bring it in not out of reach,” he said. “But if it comes in and someone is an hour and half in front it’s not very realistic.”
In the #105 Class 1 racecar, Tony Miglini will be waiting to jump in and take the car to the finish. Both his teammates – Armin Kremer and Andi Mancin – will already have driven their sections so it’s up to Miglini (shown below right) to take the car to the finish. When asked what spots concern him during his 500-plus-mile section, he said a few sections cause him more concern than others.
“I feel like were going painfully slow through the water crossings [around Lareto], but it’s a necessary evil,” he said. “That and some of the really, really fast sections are a little unnerving where any tiny little mistake can be a catastrophic failure.”
Like Christensen, Miglini says he doesn’t get very nervous other than about 15 minutes before the race. A great deal of pre-running, planning and testing has been done, so now it’s a matter or racing.
“We pre-run in the day and night, we’ve done all the homework, so at this point if we [mess] up, it’s our own fault,” he said.
