Schwarz will be starting the race in the Trophy Truck tomorrow, and his game plan is to be aggressive but play it smart.
“I think the strategy into the race is that we have to get the first 80 or 100 miles behind us, because those are always the most difficult ones,” he said. “You have a lot of dust, and we are running quite far back because we didn’t have a good draw on the starting position, so it means we have a lot of overtaking or you stay where you are. I definitely don’t want to stay where I am, so I have to play it smart to overtake where it’s possible.”
The conditions during prerunning were great, but by the time the race starts some sections of the course will have changed.
“On Saturday we had some rain out form Ojos down to San Felipe and that was a great advantage because it kept the dust down,” Schwarz said. “Now that it’s getting dry again I don’t know how much dust it will create in that short time, but at least we don’t have any really wild silt beds, and we run all the washes up and down, every line, and we link them together on GPS and pace notes, so that we can get a clean line, and we have alternate lines so that if someone is in front of us so there’s always a way of trying to overtake cars.”
The other AGM racecar is the #105 Class 1 vehicle manned by Tony Miglini, Armin Kremer and Andi Mancin. Miglini has raced the vehicle all year, and although Kremer has raced with AGM over the years this is first race of the year with the team. Mancin just recently signed on with the team and will be competing in his first Baja 1000.
Although All German Motorsports will only be fielding two race vehicles for this year’s 1000, logistically, a small army has been assembled to help support and coordinate the team’s effort. Sure, there are a few members of the media are in tow, but there are nearly 50 people in the AGM group. There are 16 vehicles in total traveling with the team, eight of which are team chase vehicles that will help provide fuel, tools, spare parts, spare tires, and anything else the race vehicles might need.
