Race Day! The morning of the 1996 Baja 500. The Toyota in the background is the
truck Jeff was racing this year. The Toyota is currently 3rd in points in Class
7S. The next photo is a view of the bed with driveshaft, extra spare, and center
link in place, and of course the last photo is the motivating power that gets
Jeff down the trail.
Jeff spared no expense on safety. A full in cab cage properly braced, gusseted,
and tied into the frame, good supportive seats, and five-point harnesses. The
next few pictures show what happened while Jeff was pre-running the Parker 400
in 1994. Note the shot of the bed. None of the stuff in the bed came out. The
only glass that broke was the windshield. The roll occured at about 45-50 mph,
and the truck was driven 30ish miles afterward. This is a great example of
proper design and making sure everything in the vehicle is securely tied down.
Taken during pre-running for the 1996 Baja 500. This spot is about 60 miles from
the coast, 30 miles south of the US/Mexico border at about 4000 feet elevation.
The race ran for about 65 miles through country like this. This area gets snow
every winter and even has a fair sized lake.
